05-Audience Research/Audience Signals

Introduction

For the research part, I used the publisher’s and magazines’ own websites rather than fan sites or third-party reviews. I did a comparison between Mac Format, Mac World, and PC Gamer in understanding the targets of each publication and the use of its contents, pricing, distribution strategies, commercial activates, etc.

Mac Format-

Mac Format presents itself as a premium magazine for people who use Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and other more Apple Devices. It’s official subscription and app descriptions emphasize on expert advice, tutorials, saving tips for the Apple Devices and methodologies on for newer users to quickly get on with Apple products.

Price and Distribution SIgnal-

Mac Format remains available as a paid specialist publication through Future’s subscription operation with a digital edition also distributed through Apple’s App store. Readers of the magazine usually pay for a specialist title, despite the availability of free technology news online, which also presents themselves as having the willingness to pay for a curated expertise despite the price it offers, and how majority of the magazine could be found just online.

Commercial Signals-

The official descriptions of its commercial signals usually refer to third-party apps and accessories that enhance the uses of Apple Devices, likely because it fits audience on spending money on Apple Hardware and also some of its software Apps, accessories, device upgrades, and productivity tools.

Mac World-

Offical Sources statements

Mac World aimed specifically at people within Apple’s corporate environment. It currently includes Apple news, reviews, tips and deals. Mac World not only brands information but also highlights the commercial value of its targeted audiences and their willingness on buying the product.

Important distribution in such findings-

Mac World differentiates itself apart from Mac Format mainly through that physical print magazine is no longer its main format. Whereas Mac World now has shifted its move away from print as audiences are increasingly consumed with many of Apple’s information’s and reviews seen online.

Commercial Signals-

Mac World’s commercial signals include hardware, software, subscriptions, and productivity tools, features audiences may recognize from certain cloud services, subscriptions and YouTube features, along with Spotify usage. This particularly suggests an audience’s interests in Apple technology as a branding but also, its actively engagement in making future technology purchasing decisions.

PC Gamer

Official publisher statements-

Future describes PC Gamer as a majority icon on PC games in general. The brand covers news, reviews, features, esports, hardware testing and PC Gaming show, and operates well, across social media and major events. This likely shows that PC Gamer is rather not a simple magazine but a large specialist in the gaming community, specifically within the UK.

Price and distribution signal-

PC Gamer continues to offer paid prints and digital magazine formats. The existence of a paid specialist publication alongside large amounts of free gaming content suggests an audience that value expertise in such prolonged fields of marketing, knowledge and brand authority.

Comerical Signals-

PC Gamer covers both games and hardware, creating a commerical environment around:

Gaming PC’s

graphics card

monitors

keyboards and mice

cases and components

new games

My descion-making on my own Magazine

As I’ve mentioned previously in my blog for post #1, my intention of the magazine will be mainly to target younger audiences with an age distribution of around 10–20-year-olds that share an interest in innovation and new digital products specifically consumer technologies like Apple Devices. (Sub Genre)

This reader is closer to the informed and visuals aware of Mac World audiences than the gaming focused PC Gamer and PlayStation audiences, therefore it would have been more accessible if I did my blog surrounding them. Specifically aiming towards younger audiences sharing an interest in technology not only because they want to buy devices but because towards their understanding of how AI and newer technologies are adapting through change in everyday life and culture.
